For many people it’s not a common occurrence that you pop your hood. If you do, hopefully it’s because you love looking at that engine and not because it’s constantly breaking down. But the last thing you want is to open it for the first time in 6 months and realize you actually have to search for the engine under the thick layer of dust and grime. Anyway, in this blog I thought I would share our process on how we clean an engine bay. Firstly, here’s a few things you’ll need.
- A simple detail brush. You can buy one of these at your local auto parts store or on amazon.
- A long wheel barrel brush. Once again you can usually buy these locally or online.
- A bucket. You can find this at your local Home Depot.
- Degreaser. Get this at the auto parts store.
- A garden hose and nozzle. You can find these also at the auto parts store.
- A plastic dressing. Find this at the auto parts store.
- Some towels. You can get these at an auto parts store.
Now that you have all the necessary tools, open that hood and let’s get to work. Here are the 7 simple steps to engine bay cleaning!
- Fill up your bucket with water and a splash of degreaser. Dunk both your brushes into the bucket.
- Rinse the engine bay.
- Spray diluted degreaser all over your engine bay and let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
- Agitate all flat surfaces with your detail brush, then scrub all the deeper, harder to reach surfaces with the wheel brush.
- Rinse.
- Dry all the surfaces with your towels OR blow dry the engine!
- Dress all the plastic surfaces to protect them and keep the engine cleaner for longer!
Now you can rest easy knowing that if you ever need to perform an oil change yourself.. you will easily be able to find the engine! And you can know that you have the cleanest engine on the road!
